Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week – 15-21 September 2019
Light Up for Mito (#lightupformito) is an annual global campaign hosted by International Mito Patients (IMP) involving illuminating landmarks around the world in green to raise awareness of Mitochondrial Disease (mito) for one week in September.
Mitochondrial Disease (‘Mito’) is a debilitating genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure and potentially death. I’d never heard of it until it took the life of my friend’s 14-month-old daughter Anna.
There is currently no cure so following Anna’s death her parents set up The Anna Lewis Brighter Future Fund. They raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Mitochondrial Research Group and have so far raised over £314,000 with the aim to fundraise until a cure is found.
Awareness-raising is such an important part of this campaign. This is where you come in…
Do you have an external scheme that can be switched to green from the 15th until the 21st of September 2019? Do you have a building we can come and light green?
Please photograph your green lit architecture, monuments, fountains, bridges, art and gardens and share on social media with the hashtag #lightupformito.
Please get in touch with us if you are able to get involved. The more noise we can make the better. Thank you
